About the Bluenose Class
The history of the bluenose sloop reaches back to 1946 when the first 12 wooden Bluenose Sloops, built in East Chester, set sail in 1946. Eventually, 77 boats were produced and migrated throughout the Maritime Provinces, Ontario, the New England States with core of the fleet remaining in Nova Scotia.
In the mid 1960s, George McVay of Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia - under license with designer W.J. Roué - began manufacturing a fiberglass version of the Bluenose design from a mold that was made from the hull of Skylark, sail number B71, a wooden boat that remained in very good condition at the time.
Today, Nova Scotia waters is home to both wooden and fibreglass bluenoses – alterations and improvements in rigging and fittings reflect the needs of an evolving racing fleet and one that continues to honour Nova Scotia’s bluenose sailing heritage.
During the past few years, we have seen considerable interest in bluenose class sailing with addition of a number of new boats to the fleet. Our thanks to Bluenose Class Association membership for their interest and support in growing an impressive fleet.
