The black and white photos were taken by Russell Heffler in 1946 and the negatives were marked “First Bluenose Race, July 13, 1946.” Russell’s son sent them to us and we are fortunate to be able to have a close look at Bluenose sailing in it’s infancy.
Russell was born in Bedford, Nova Scotia, in 1912 and lived there (an in Halifax) all his life. He was an avid amateur photographer – a hobby that was much less common at that time than it is today. Russell liked boats, but his son says he’s figures his father preferred taking pictures of then rather than sailing on them. He sometimes sailed with Wallace R. MacAskill, the renowned marine photographer.
